First Annual Officer Jane Warner Picnic
June 6, 2010, Dolores Park (The Castro)

District 8 supervisor candidate Rafael Mandlemann (pictured left side of picture with Ann, Glen Park, and Greggy, one of the sponsors) stopped by the wonderful picnic to remember Officer Jane Warner who passed on May 8. Rafael spent some time discussing the nature of crime in the Castro, and the lack of local alcohol-free social venues. Candidate Scott Weiner paid his regards earlier in the event.

Castro Community on Patrol sponsored the event. Their Executive Director Damian Ochoa and Officer Jane's long-time friend Emanuelle, add Jane's hat and remember Jane beside her poster. Rick Choy, former consultant to the Special Neighborhood Policing group of officers, signs the Patrol Special's Letter of Support.

SAFETY AWARENESS/SELF DEFENSE CLASS
Level One Basic View new photo gallery. Our safety class was supported by Supervisor Dufty, and mentioned on the 12:30 am news, NBC Channel 3, February 18, 2010. If you missed our class, you may participate in others across the city (one scheduled on April 13 at 2 pm at the Metropolitan Community Church on Eureka Street)

On March 7, 2010, 12 people met at St. John's School to discuss safety awareness and self defense in a class led by black-belt martial arts instructor Ken Craig and his four assistants. Ken founded the non-profit Triangle Martial Arts Association and offers seminars throughout the city, plus the organization has groups in other cities and countries as well. See, www.TriangleMAA.org. Students first learned about other safety options such as NERT (emergency) training by the Fire Dept. and SAFE home watches, then heard three SFPD officers discuss crime patterns in Ingleside and other safety techniques. Officer Cal and Ann discussed how the Patrol Special program supplements the SFPD which is facing a serious budget shortfall this year and will be cutting back SFPD officers or hours. The group seeks to expand Officer Cal's hours this year to 2 pm so that he is on patrol when school children get out.  Supervisor candidate Rafael Mandlemann attended the class to observe and learn about our concerns.

Instructor Ken then spent 2 hours discussing safety strategies, techniques, legal implements, and mindset (stay tuned for a summary of what we learned). He concluded class with a very useful practice of various simple techniques for avoiding a confrontation, or if not possible, how to escape or implement simple strike-back techniques. Ken stressed that the goal is to evade and avoid attack, that legally, no more force can be used than is necessary to do just that, and that there are no guarantees of any outcome no matter what decision you make.. Every person has to think through in advance of going out of their home, where and how they are going then choose the safest alternative in advance of a confrontation. We also need to think through now, how we will respond and what we are willing to give up and do in order to protect ourselves. He stressed that everyone deserves to protect themselves, even as they would protect their children or parents from attack. It was clear that psychological preparation, as well as physical readiness and alertness, are the foundational elements of effective self defense.  GPsafetyprogram@gmail.com  Click here to see the picture gallery.
